With this in mind, people could see the importance of managing stress. So how do you manage stress with finesse?

First, you must determine the root cause of the stress. When stress becomes an issue, determining the root cause is critical in providing positive and productive solutions towards it. Once we determine the root cause(s) of our stress, the next step is to conduct thorough research that could help with managing the stress more effectively based on research findings.

To illustrate, let’s take look at the recent downturn in our economy that led to additional job stress for many Americans because employees took on more responsibilities at work due to layoffs. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, job stress can be defined as the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker.

The high stress levels in the workplace could have a measurable impact on workers’ health and, by extension, the bottom-line of organizations because stress can contribute to increased health problems, higher healthcare costs, and more missed time at work due to psychological and physical health problems such as obesity, hardening of arteries, suppressed immune function, etc. A recent poll by the New York Times stated that 62% say their workload has increased over the last six months; 53% say work leaves them “overtired and overwhelmed.” By knowing the root cause of the stress, we can requests for additional help from our colleagues to alleviate some of the workload. Furthermore, we could also research for other methods to help with the reduction of stress at the workplace from reputable sites, such as http://www.apa.org, etc. This will help to confirm on the validity of the information acquired because these organizations have been conducting research on stress for many years and base their information on facts and statistics, rather than opinions and assumptions. When researching, one should correlate that data to the actual root cause of the stress, and evaluate that data by taking into perspective all sides of the information so that they’re able to apply it to their own special circumstances.

Once we are satisfied with the information that was obtained and analyzed all possible aspects of that data, the next step is to find stress management techniques to assist us with addressing the stress at the root cause. By cross-referencing the information obtained from reputable sites for stress management, we can develop and implement strategies that would provide us with the best outcome.

To give you an example, let’s imagine that my workplace is the root cause of my stress. Research indicates that the top three suggested techniques for addressing this particular workplace stress would be to improve on time management, incorporate relaxation exercises, such as meditation and tai-chi into my regimen, and by eating healthier.

Please note that in order to effectively incorporate these changes to improve on stress management, people would need to implement eight steps that have been proven to be successful in providing everlasting changes. The eight steps include increasing the urgency for the change; building a guiding team that is powerful and collaborative; getting the vision and strategy right; communicating for buy-in by changing our behavior; empowering our actions; creating short-term wins; persistence; making the changes stick by continuously implementing our new behavior and habits to confirm that the changes are in effect. By following these proven guidelines, we can increase the probability of reducing our stress because we have incorporated permanent changes that addresses the root cause of the stress and aligns with our strategies for stress management.

The last step is to constantly monitor your progress. Like anything in life, proper self assessments can help us in determining that we’re on the right track to reaching our goals. Several stress self assessment tests can be found. By periodically completing these self assessments for stress, one can determine if the strategies that are put in place works, or if we need to modify our strategies to make it more effective.

In the end, stress can come in all varying forms and affect many different aspects of our lives. If we are not careful in addressing our stress factors in a timely manner, the potential impact that it could have on a person’s career, family, and health are astronomical. Therefore, we need to be certain that we implement the appropriate stress management techniques, followed by confirming that those techniques work with proper self assessments.

So if you want to start enjoying a higher quality of life, then my recommendation is to incorporate the strategies listed above and begin managing your stress with finesse today!
